Dr. Daniel Shanahan

Director of Education and Research

Daniel H. Shanahan
is the Director of Education and Research at Sirius Thinking, Ltd., and is the educational consultant to the children's television series Between the Lions for English Language Learners. Dr. Shanahan serves at the Principal Investigator of two literacy-based research and development projects on the series funded by grants from the National Institute of Health and Human Development and the Institute of Education Sciences at the U. S. Department of Education. These projects seek to ascertain the effectiveness of bilingual and other ELL-focused modifications on increasing childrenωs English literacy skills and vocabulary knowledge.

Dr. Shanahan has spent 20 years in the field of education. Prior to his work with Sirius Thinking, Dr. Shanahan was the Director of the New York City Bilingual/ESL Technical Assistance Center at Hunter College, in Manhattan. In this position Dr. Shanahan worked with schools, districts, and the New York State Education Department (NYSED) on issues regarding the education of children of limited English proficiency, including educational training, curriculum development, and policy. Dr. Shanahan was also the coordinator and principal writer of the New York State English as a Second Language Learning Standards, and served as an advisor to NYSED on the development of the New York State ESL Achievement Test (NYSESLAT), which is based on the ESL Standards.

Dr. Shanahan has been teaching graduate education courses as Adjunct Assistant Professor of Education at New York University's Steinhardt School of Education since 1995. He has also taught English to middle and high school students in the New York City public school system and to adults abroad. He served as an English Teaching Specialist in Saudi Arabia through the U.S. Department of State, and currently works with numerous school districts as an educational consultant. Dr. Shanahan is also an appointed member of the Community Education Council of District 3 in the New York City Department of Education. Other educational projects designed and led by Dr. Shanahan include evaluation of technology programs and teacher preparation programs at both the K-12 school level and the university level, and diversity and ethnic/racial awareness training for teachers and school administrators.

Dr. Shanahan's research interests center on exploring the many facets of educating English language learners. The areas thatf most concern him include pre-service teacher preparation programs; school-based teacher education; curriculum, pedagogical, and assessment strategies for second language learners; and video and media techniques for English language and literacy development. The research methods Dr. Shanahan has employed in his investigations range from the quantitative (experimental, survey, and correlational) to the qualitative (ethnographic and focus group interview).
